“I did and they are suitably alarmed,” Greg assured him. “They realize that the Huntsville problem is the immediate threat, but both Dawson and Pickett recognized the threat that Nutworth represents. I believe they will be more than willing to stand up by the time we see representatives of the Nutty Army.”

“Wonderful.”

“Hey Jake, you got a minute?”

The mechanic looked up to see Leon Tillman of all people, walking through his garage. He had hoped to see Sienna coming back to help him but she had other duties, so he was working pretty much alone.

“What are you doing, anyway?” the teen asked as he reached the flatbed tow truck.

“I'm seeing about pulling an engine from somewhere else and putting it in here,” Jake told him. “I've got a semi outside that runs but the frame is warped. We'd never get any real use out of it. I'm measuring and spotting bolt holes to see if it will line up right.”

“Awesome,” the kid nodded, looking over the huge rig with wonder.

“You needed something?” Jake prompted.

“Oh! Yeah, I did,” Deuce snapped out of it. “I was thinking-,”

“And that's where the trouble starts,” Jake cut in, eyebrows raised.

“Ha ha,” Deuce snorted. “So funny. If your mechanic job doesn't make good you can always open a comedy club. But anyway, I was thinking. We still need material, and I came up with a source that is not bottomless, but is plentiful. And it's simple.”

“Does it have a name?” Jake prompted, trying to get the kid to get to the point.

“Road signs,” the boy said simply. Jake just looked at him.

“Road signs, Jake,” Deuce tried again. “Stop signs, yield, merging traffic, lane ends, not to mention those great big green and brown signs out on the highway! All of them are made with very good steel, usually a quarter inch or so thick.”

“Son-of-a-gun,” Jake looked stunned. “Damn, kid. That is a great idea!”

“Heck, you can just haul a trailer down the road and drop the signs on there as you get them loose.”

“We sure can, kiddo,” Jake got to his feet, ruffling the boy's hair. “We sure can.”

“Hey man, watch the hair,” Deuce pulled away from him. “I need that to look good.”

“Why?” Jake grinned. “Find a girlfriend somewhere?”

The kid's blush was all the answer one needed for that question.
